JUST THE FACTS: KIDS ON COURTS

Whether you're taking a new player out for a first fun hit, enrolling them in camp or getting private lessons there are a few boxes to check in doing it right. The basics are racquet, shoes and play.

PICK A STICK

Racquets for youth are measured by length.   Adult racquets are 27 inches long and youth racquets vary, thus ensuring the new stick fits their size and capability is key. Racquets that are too long or heavy make the most simple play frustrating and a small stick will produce no power to put the ball in play.  Starter racquets range from $35- $65 and are made of aluminum, making them lightweight and indestructible. The next step would be choosing a graphite racquet, they  are lightweight and allow for power and spin.  Best practice is to visit your  local tennis shop with your child to get specialized hands-on advice. Here at Tennis Station, we have many quality options for junior racquets for every age and level.

SAFETY WITH EVERY STEP

The quick starting, stopping, and lateral movements in tennis make finding the  right shoe important so players feet and ankles are supported. Trying on different shoes at a local pro-shop will allow the proper fit and keep a new player safe on court.

MAKING IT EASY IS MAKING IT FUN!

Choosing equipment that is appropriate will be the difference between wanting your player to like the sport or tolerating the experience.  Talk to your local tennis shop for camp or instructor options.   Not all instructors are built to teach youth tennis.   It’s a development program and takes great detail in getting right from the beginning.
