TENNIS RACQUET Tension is a GOOD THING!

Tennis string tension refers

to how tightly the strings are pulled in a racket, measured in pounds (lbs.).   String tension significantly affects your game by influencing power, control, and feel.   Lower tension (below 52 lbs.) gives the player more power and a larger sweet spot.   New players prefer the added power a low tension delivers.   Higher string tension (above 52 lbs.) allows advanced players to bring accuracy and precision to advance their game.

  • Lower Tension: Looser strings deform more upon impact, allowing for greater energy return and a larger sweet spot. This is beneficial for generating power and spin, making it easier for beginners to hit consistent shots.

  • Higher Tension: Tighter strings provide more control and precision. They reduce the time the ball spends on the strings, which can help with shot placement and accuracy.

Playing style is crucial in determining the best tension:

  • Baseliners: Prefer medium to high tension for control and topspin.

  • Serve-and-Volley Players: Benefit from lower tension for power and a larger sweet spot.

  • All-Court Players: A mid-range tension offers a balance of power and control.

Different string materials also affect how tension impacts your game:

  • Multifilament String: Best at higher tensions for comfort and control.

  • Polyester String: Perform well at lower tensions, providing power and spin.

  • Hybrid Stringing: Combine different materials for a tailored feel and performance.

Selecting the proper tension and with the proper string type will enhance your performance on the court.
